Tanya Mascarenhas

I am an artist and independent researcher based in London with previous work experience at galleries and auction houses. I recently completed my undergraduate degree in History of Art from Goldsmiths University. My research is based around the art market, specifically the role of art fairs and the extent at which fairs have reached a global status and their demand in various parts of the world, with a focus on Europe and Asia. These areas of research are explored further in my own artworks, which are portraits that represent the many faces I has encountered during my life. Most recently, I assisted with a project at a gallery in Mumbai, delving into an extensive archive celebrating the gallery’s 60-year exhibition as one of the oldest and most renowned commercial galleries in India.

The intention of this reading list is to investigate the notion of the ‘global contemporary’, taking into account the ever-changing roles of galleries and art fairs in the construction of the ‘global’, which constitutes both aesthetic, economic social and political values. Is the art market the main area which the global has a direct impact on, or does it extend beyond this?

The Global Contemporary

With the establishment of a New World Order, the art world swiftly reconfigured itself. "A rash of art events peppered the globe, while artists of many nations, ethnicities, and cultures long ignored in the West were born to critical and commercial success.” - Belting, Hans. Contemporary Art as Global Art A Critical Estimate (2009).
